Kappa FuturFestival, a massive electronic music festival launched in 2009 and named Best International Festival at the 2019 DJ Awards, once again had Parco Dora dancing in Turin, Italy. The festival brings together world-class house and techno DJs across multiple stages in a striking, open-air industrial architecture setting, drawing over 120,000 attendees from around the globe.
This year as well, the festival confirmed its place among Europe's leading techno events. Across its multiple stages, around 100 PROLIGHTS SunBar FLX, supplied through the dry hire inventory of Italian rental company Lucidiscena, played a central role on two of them: the Voyager Stage and the Nova Stage.
The lighting design for both stages was created by GUARDA. Studio, led by Maicol Trezzi and Lorenzo Polimeno. Combining a White Beam source with 24 controllable sections and an RGB+WW plate with 32 pixels, the SunBar FLX gave the design team the output needed to remain effective even under Turin's July daylight, while its electronic frost filter and modular strobe control opened up a wide range of graphic effects.
On the Voyager Stage, set between two of Parco Dora's original industrial towers, the fixtures lined either side of the central LED video wall from base to top, while a further row ran along the front edge of the stage deck, adding a horizontal band of colour at crowd level.
The Nova Stage, meanwhile, saw the SunBar FLX rigged along its distinctive double-arch truss structure, tracing the curve of both arches from ground to apex in a continuous run of colour that outlined the stage architecture itself.
"For Kappa FuturFestival we needed an IP-rated bar that was both rugged and highly versatile," said Lorenzo Polimeno, Founder of GUARDA. Studio. "The SunBar FLX proved particularly well suited to the context: the festival takes place largely during daylight hours, so it was essential for us to have a product with enough output to remain effective even in daytime conditions. From that point of view, the performance was very positive. We also appreciated being able to work with the 24-section strobe and the 32-pixel plate, which let us build a wide range of varied effects, with smooth, linear transitions."
Technical production for the two stages was managed by ATS Service, alongside technical production director Andrea Moi, who coordinated operations across the whole festival. Lighting operators Vittorio Campagnolo, Alessandro Lazzarini, Enrico Gallo, Emanuele Mantovani, Steve Giovanazzi and Giuliano Locke kept the Voyager and Nova stages running throughout the weekend.
From the sweeping arches of the Nova Stage to the vertical scale of the Voyager screen, the SunBar FLX proved the ideal solution for both Kappa FuturFestival's industrial architecture and the demands of natural light, confirming PROLIGHTS' ability to adapt to even the most complex lighting environments on large-scale outdoor productions.
