PROLIGHTS Illuminates the Grand Egyptian Museum

Near one of the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza has officially opened a new cultural landmark of the modern era: the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Described as the world's largest archaeological museum, the GEM houses around 100,000 artefacts spanning roughly seven millennia of history, from pre-dynastic times through the Greek and Roman periods.

Stretching out before the museum is a broad plaza lined with date palms, guiding visitors towards one of the project's most distinctive features: the main façade, a monumental translucent wall of alabaster, 800 meters long and up to 40 meters high.

Echoing the clean geometry of the site, 101 ArcPod 48Q and 64 PROLIGHTS Mosaico XL units are positioned throughout the plaza to illuminate the impressive alabaster façade. The fixtures are distributed across 23 poles and managed over 8 DMX universes, ensuring precise control and uniform coverage of the entire architectural surface.

Mounted on the plaza poles, the ArcPod 48Q units provide the main wash of light on the alabaster façade, delivering up to 23,000 lumens from their 48x10W RGBW / FC LEDs. Their compact, fanless IP66-rated design makes them ideal for the demanding outdoor environment around the Giza plateau, while the four individually controllable LED sections allow to create subtle colour gradients and refined transitions across the stone surface.

The Mosaico XL fixtures were extensively used to project images onto the façade, ranging from triangular motifs created with the framing system to custom gobos designed specifically for the project and depicting constellations. These dynamic textures enhance the museum's nighttime identity, visually linking the architecture to the celestial themes and ancient narratives housed inside.

The project further highlights the versatility and performance of PROLIGHTS architectural solutions in enhancing large-scale cultural landmarks. By combining powerful, precise illumination with respect for the integrity of the site, PROLIGHTS technology contributes to making the Grand Egyptian Museum an iconic point of reference on the Giza plateau.
